Care after previous surgery
Revisional bariatric surgery on the Gold Coast
New symptoms, complications or weight regain after bariatric surgery deserve careful assessment. Revision is complex and is not automatically the right response.
Specialist assessment
Understanding what has changed
People seek review after previous bariatric surgery for many reasons, including reflux, swallowing difficulty, pain, nutritional problems, device complications, insufficient weight change or weight regain.
Assessment may include your original operative records, symptom and weight history, nutrition review, blood tests, imaging or endoscopy. Non-surgical management may be appropriate in some circumstances.
Possible pathways
Depending on the original procedure and findings, discussion may include correction of a complication, removal of a device, restoration of anatomy or conversion to another bariatric procedure.
Higher complexity
Revision surgery can carry different or greater risks than a first operation because of scar tissue and altered anatomy. Risks, benefits and alternatives must be considered individually.
Bring information from your previous treatment
If available, bring operation reports, implant details, recent pathology, imaging, endoscopy reports and a list of medicines and supplements. This helps the surgeon understand your anatomy and previous care.
